A change in idea -

Ive decided to refine my initial idea of using my whole family and the conversation that goes on between them and focus soley on the relationship between my parents. Im going to think more about the idea that life can be a performance and play around with that idea, using everyday situations they do e.g- haveing breakfast together and turning them in to a photo that looks like a scene in a play, all done in the in the studio. I will then ask my parents to have a conversation and record that to use as quotes from the play like situation. I have always been facinated by my own family and how dramatic we can all tend to be and ive always thought of our family as if we're constantly performing, but it seemed a lot more practical on this occasion just to focus on a relationship between two people. What im trying to communicate through my images is the drama that often goes in in a household or a marriage.

Inspiration from another family

The television programme 'the family' originally broadcasted in 1974 is a great influence in this project. The idea of becoming a fly on the wall and hearing the interesting and at times imusing things that can happen in a family situation -  above (top) modern day family partake in a around the clock filming for a year (bottom) the original wilkins family.

An idea -

After looking at numerous images for the last few days and researching different text based photographors, I decided to look a little closer to home and what really interested me. Whilst having a family meal this evening and listening to the bustling conversations and drama unfold I came up with an  idea that  revolves around conversations that are often had between one family and in paricular the conversation that happen in a marrige. I will look closely at re - creatingone of my own family scenes in the stuio, exagerating each aspect to create an image reflecating a scene from a play, which is often what I am reminded of in family situations, I want to add to use this idea of how life can be a performance and shoot the images in the studio in a theatrical way, using lighting and studio techniques which I will be learning throughout the project.

Initial Brainstorm

Project brief and an introduction -

The key idea is to combine text with photographs in such a way that they adhere effectively together. Text and photographs have a long standing integral link with each other. Often used to illustrate the finer points text is used mostly to bring meaning and understanding to a photographic image (READ JOHN HUMPHRYS: BEYOND WORDS). In contemporary times text is often used to distract and or deliberately force us to read pictures in another way bringing ideas and concepts to realisation. The text should be an integral part of the photograph adding both understanding and conceptual appreciation. 

In another sense the text can be used to illustrate or contradict your photographs. You may consider the photographs as a series to form a narrative that explains your ideas more clearly. The text can be from any suitable source so long as they are combined with the images in an appropriate style that merges both forms of communication successfully. 

Consider the complete image, the meaning, rather than individual textual lines of representation. This will help you to determine the mood of the piece and therefore the tone and feeling in your own images.

Reflecting on a metaphorical approach will enable you to visualise your ideas to a much greater degree and perhaps challenge stereotypes and formal modes of visual communication. Research is crucial for a successful execution and therefore ideas from research must be presented to tutors at the beginning and at various stages through the assignment.
